One of my readers wrote in for some advice on personal fulfillment. With her permission, I’m posting a transcript of our email exchange…
I work in insurance claims and although I recently landed a promotion, I still feel there’s something missing. I thought I wanted to grow with the company, but I feel my life is going in circles and every day is the same. What advice do you have?
The reason you feel empty is because you’re not following your passion. I talk to people all the time who have decent jobs, bring in decent income, and enjoy their colleagues, but still feel unfulfilled.
I would suggest that you spend a few days trying to figure out what feeds your soul. Many people realize they are not on the right path, yet keep trudging along because they don’t know what else to do. In other words, they settle… until retirement.
People who are the most satisfied in life listen to their inner voice when it tells them to break away from the norm. This involves a period of transition in which they feel scared, overwhelmed, and full of doubt. It’s important to keep moving forward in spite of these feelings, because they are fear-based. I love to quote this line from a recent Will Smith movie:
“Fear is not real. The only place that fear can exist is in our thoughts of the future. It is a product of our imagination, causing us to fear things that do not at present and may not ever exist. “
The first step to personal fulfillment is realizing what it is you’re passionate about and start an action plan. Today. Don’t wait, because this usually leads to falling back into the same repetitive behaviors that lead to discontentment in the first place. Although it may take a few days to figure it all out, you still need to set aside time each day to plan so you can make it work.
Hope this helps!
