I don’t know about you guys, but the thought of getting older used to scare the bejeebers out of me. I believed only a luck of the draw would determine if I would one day find myself sitting in a wheelchair, drugged into a medical stupor, waiting for someone to change my adult undergarment. While “modern” technology can help us live a longer life, really, who would want to in that condition?
None of us want to consider that we might suffer this terrible fate. Luckily, we don’t have to. We can age in great health, with our brains unimpaired and our energy at active levels. But, it will take changing the way we approach our health at present.
When you look around and see aging people who can’t think or walk or take care of themselves, much of that has to do with the life-long toxic buildup of chemicals in their bodies. And if we don’t take charge of our health now, we could end up in the same condition.
Chemicals are in our food, in our homes, in the air we breathe, and in our water. If you live in a state that supplements the public water supply with fluoride, you would do well not to drink it. Fluoride is a toxic by-product of aluminum (which apparently doesn’t prevent cavities as once believed) and we drink it, shower in it, cook with it, and water our gardens with it. Just think, I haven’t even mentioned the added chlorine.
Alzheimer’s, which was once associated with much older people, is now affecting the younger population in their 40s and 50s. And, the sad fact is that dementia in 30-yr olds is predicted in epic proportions over the next twenty years. Why? Mainly because of diet sodas and food additives.
So, how do you prevent landing in a nursing home years earlier than necessary? How do you protect your children from becoming victims of dementia at 30 or 40? It would take a book to break it all down, but here are some steps to get you headed toward real health and vitality.
1. Avoid artificial sweeteners and diet sodas
No matter what you may have read about Aspartame being okay to eat in certain amounts…it’s not. It’s a neurotoxin (kills brain cells) and carcinogen. It erodes intelligence and affects short-term memory. Don’t be fooled by the pseudo-studies that say it’s fit for consumption. It’s like saying it’s okay to eat small amounts of rat poison every day. Would you knowingly eat poison? Probably not, yet millions of people continue to eat fake sweeteners and drink diet sodas. FOUND IN: Diet drinks, chewing gum, breath mints, Jell-O, some desserts, pudding, Kool-Aid, canned and bottled sweet tea, some vitamins and toothpaste.
2. Avoid MSG (Monosodium Glutamate) and Yeast Extract
MSG and Yeast Extract are cheap flavor enhancers used in many of your everyday foods and snacks such as chips, crackers, and soups. It’s what gives those foods their salty flavor. It’s also an excitotoxin, a substance which overexcites cells to the point of damage or death. In other words, it causes your cells to have a little party before they spontaneously die. MSG has dangerous side effects, yet people eat large amounts of it almost every day. Aside from the neurological damage it can do, it tricks your brain into thinking you’re still hungry, leading you to eat more and more. Food manufacturers use it because it’s so cheap, and because your body becomes addicted to it. If it’s boxed, canned, or processed, don’t buy it. FOUND IN: many snacks, chips, cookies, seasonings, most soup products, frozen dinners, lunch meats, and packaged soup starters, gravies, etc.
3. Avoid Common Food Dyes
Many food dyes have been banned in other countries because they have been linked to behavioral problems in children, chromosomal damage and reduced IQ. Animal studies have linked food coloring to cancer. Yet, how ironic it is that the products geared toward children contain the highest amounts. Colored cereals and candies are your child’s worst nightmare, yet parents stock up the grocery cart with these poisons every day. FOUND IN: candy, cereal, sports drinks, maraschino cherries, fruit cocktail, macaroni and cheese, American cheese, and more. When you see Blue#, Red #, and Yellow # on the ingredient label, run the other way! You can find safe alternatives in the organic food section, but you still need to read labels.
4. Avoid Packaged, Processed Meats – Sodium Nitrate/Sodium Nitrite
Hotdogs, bacon, ham, luncheon meat, cured meats, corned beef, smoked fish or any other type of processed meat. Yep, pretty much the whole section of the packaged meat aisle. Oscar Myer has a “Selects” line that doesn’t contain sodium nitrate, but you should still eat with moderation because of the high fat content. Oh, sodium nitrate is actually highly carcinogenic once it enters the human digestive system. It’s also what makes the dead, lifeless meat look fresh and pink, no matter that it’s been hanging in the cooler for weeks.
5. Avoid Potassium Bromate
Say what? What the heck is that, you ask? It’s an additive used in most white flour, breads, and rolls, and is known to cause cancer in animals. Even small amounts in bread can create problems for humans. It’s been banned in several other countries, including CHINA, because it causes cancer in rats and mice. Yet it’s still legal here in the ole US of A. Found in: breads and innocent-looking bakery items in your local grocery store.
There’s no better time than now to take control of your health and vitality. What’s that you say…your parents ate all the above foods and they’re fine? Are they really? Just because the older generation is alive doesn’t mean they’re okay. Unless your definition of okay includes out-of-control weight gain, stomach problems, aches, pain stiffness, bad knees and life-threatening conditions like diabetes, osteoporosis, dementia, brain tumors and mental problems, to name a few. I don’t know about you, but I’m avoiding all the above items like my life depends on it…oh wait, it does.
