Essential Oils to Reduce Anxiety

More and more people are turning to essential oils to address the spiritual, physical and emotional components of the body.  But because essential oils are natural and can’t be patented, there are no governmental bodies or organizations that approve or certify essential oils.  Because of this, they are not used in pharmaceuticals, nor recommended by mainstream medical doctors.

Unlike prescription medications for anti-anxiety and anti-depressant medications, essential oils do not accumulate in the body over time – they are applied to the skin, absorbed into the bloodstream where they work their magic, and are passed through the body.  The great thing about essential oils is that they penetrate cell membranes almost immediately and travel throughout the body in less than a minute.  (**Please do not go off of any medication before consulting with your physician.  Some medications are necessary, such as those prescribed for Bipolar Disorder, high blood pressure, etc.).

Essential oils can be inhaled, diffused, applied to the body (neat), and some can be taken orally.  However, when it comes to applying them to your skin or taking them internally, it’s crucial that oils intended for these uses be therapeutic grade, such as those purchased from DoTerra or Young Living.  For diffusing, inhaling, and bathing I usually use organic oils from Mountain Rose Herbs, and for other uses such as applying to the skin or ingestion, I use oils from Young Living.

When one is in an abusive relationship with a Narcissist or other toxic personality, stress and anxiety become a part of everyday life.  These negative emotions result in the build-up of negative energy and negative emotions which later present as conditions such as depression, emotional instability, mood swings…as well as physical symptoms like hormonal imbalance, joint and muscle pain, and cardiovascular conditions.  Commonly, targets of Narcissistic abuse suffer from anxiety/panic attacks.  Some popular essential oils that address these conditions are:

  • Lavender
  • Jasmine
  • Sandalwood
  • Lemon Balm
  • Frankincense

Personally, I like to diffuse oregano essential oil because it not only kills bacteria and viruses in the air, it helps instill feelings of safety, security, and lessens feelings of vulnerability.  (For this, I use the organic oregano oil from Mountain Rose Herbs).

I  absolutely love Frankincense…for everything.  Inhaling and diffusing Frankincense helps with feelings of insecurity and unworthiness and is very uplifting.  Not only do I love the smell of this oil, it is used for many health issues and is currently being studied for its role in reducing and curing cancer.  For topical application and ingestion, you’ll want to splurge on the therapeutic grade from Young Living. 

Important notes to keep in mind are that perfume oils are not the same as essential oils and usually don’t do well in diffusers because of their thickness.  Also, not all essential oils are meant for topical application or to be taken internally, so it’s crucial that you do your homework before using them.  Never use them on babies or children undiluted (and there are certain ones that should be avoided or diluted during pregnancy).
